The
hypertufa substitute is also lightweight and is created with a basic
mixture of cement, sand, peat moss and water. Other recipes for hypertufa
may involve the use of aggregates such as perlite and vermiculite, in
differing amounts. Hypertufa
has a natural antique appearance, which is further enhanced by hand texturing
and the degradation, over time, of peat moss on the exposed surfaces. The
normal earth tone of hypertufa and its inherent ability to promote the
growth of surface moss and lichens, allow it to blend with, and accent,
the natural beauty of garden foliage and structures. Green
colour tinting can also give the appearance of moss growth. Tinted pieces benefit greatly from a
periodic coating of motor oil to keep the tint colour looking fresh. A periodic coat of motor oil, when applied to the
natural hypertufa, will produce a rich, dark colour tone, but will
inhibit the ability to grow surface moss. Hypertufa
is at its best in a garden environment and just like plants needs
moisture to blossom and thrive.
Water your hypertufa as you would your plants. info@mariansgarden.ca Tel. 519-674-2916
Hypertufa is a synthetic
substitute for tufa rock, which is found in limestone rich areas. Tufa is cellular, porous, and
lightweight.
Perhaps one of the most
endearing features of hypertufa is its ability not only to withstand, but also to
thrive, in our rugged Canadian winters.
